About ATL

Amy Turner Landscape is committed to meaningful, simple design that complements the surrounding context. Green spaces, whether public or private, are constantly evolving. Using elemental local materials such as wood, stone, and indigenous plants, my work aims to renew the environmental integrity of a given space.

Every green space is an opportunity to improve the quality of a space, from urban parks to rural and urban residential properties. Over 15 years of practice have resulted in extensive experience working both with private homeowners and not-for-profit organizations. The challenge in every instance is to find creative ways to fruitfully engage the people who use the space.

The goal is always to provide clients with a clear creative vision for the places they inhabit by taking cues from naturally occurring native plant communities and developing planting schemes that are resilient, functional, and beautiful.

Inspired by the work of scientist, Doug Tallamy, one small urban garden may provide a limited amount of biodiversity, but the cumulative effects of many gardens can result in a habitat of rare complexity and richness. On every project, the purpose is to maximize functions within the space, introduce plant diversity, and contribute to healthy urban ecosystems.

Approach

Urbanization has disrupted once-productive landscapes, permanently altering natural habitats. Ecologically informed landscape design aims to restore harmony between human activities and the environment. By focusing on site-specific, contextual solutions, this approach ensures long-term sustainability while enhancing the natural surroundings for people and wildlife alike. It recognizes the interconnectedness of landscape elements—people, plants, animals, soil, water, insects, and ecosystems—creating balanced, thriving spaces.

Key goals of ecologically-informed landscape design:

  • Conserve natural resources through sustainable practices.

  • Protect and enhance biodiversity in urban areas.

  • Adopt low-impact maintenance strategies to reduce environmental disruption and resource consumption.

The aim is to foster spaces that are not only beautiful but also environmentally responsible, enriching the lives of those who experience them.

Testimonials

“I can’t say enough good about Amy Turner. We hired her as our landscape architect to design and oversee our Bayview Garden project at St. Cuthbert’s, Leaside (Anglican Church) in Toronto. She began by convening several sessions with our members to discern what they wanted to see in the project, synthesized over 100 inputs from people into a project concept, then “brought” the whole excellent project team with her (the stone mason, the landscape contractor, the graphic signage team, etc.) and, finally, oversaw the project from beginning to end working seamlessly and comfortably with our management team and all volunteers and members. A truly great talent! We were so fortunate to have her.”

Ian Beverley, St. Cuthbert’s Church

“Amy has truly created something magical for us—a diverse, thriving native garden that supports insects and birds, is beautiful to look at, and, most importantly, provides a deep sense of calm right in the heart of Parkdale.”
